HOW TO MAKE A MANGA WITH AI

You don't need to draw to tell a story in manga form anymore. This guide walks you from first idea to finished, shareable pages in six steps — with tips that make the difference between random images and a manga people want to read.

01

SHAPE YOUR IDEA INTO A PREMISE

Every good manga starts with three things: a character, what they want, and what’s stopping them. “A ninja fights a robot” is a scene; “a rogue ninja must destroy the machine that was built from her clan’s stolen secrets” is a story.

Write your premise in one or two sentences. If you’re stuck, borrow one from our 60 manga story ideas or tap Inspire Me inside the creator.

Pro tip: Add one unusual detail — a strange power, setting or secret. It's what makes readers remember your story.
02

PICK THE ART STYLE THAT FITS YOUR GENRE

Style tells readers what kind of story they’re in before they read a word. Mankai has nine, and each one changes the colouring, the linework and the number of panels per page:

  • Manga — black-and-white ink, six panels; action, school stories, samurai.
  • Manhwa — full-colour Korean webcomic, three big panels; romance, fantasy. More
  • Manhua — painterly Chinese style, five panels; wuxia, palace drama. More
  • Comic Book — bold Western comics, four panels; superheroes, sci-fi. More
  • Seinen — gritty and mature, five panels; noir, dark fantasy. More
  • Boys Love and Girls Love — romance-first art, four panels. BL · GL
  • Love Triangle and Golden Spirit — romantic tension, and ornate mythic fantasy.

Compare them side by side on the styles page.

Pro tip: Unsure? Make the same two pages in two styles and keep the one you'd rather read.
03

CREATE CHARACTERS THAT STAY CONSISTENT

The biggest difference between a manga and a pile of AI images is consistency: the hero on page one has to look like the hero on page ten. In Mankai you choose your cast before generating — up to 8 characters per story — and their faces stay the same on every page.

Start with a preset hero like Nyra, Kairo or Shiori, or add your own: upload a photo, give the character a name, and optionally set gender, age group and hair style. It’s the easiest way to put yourself or a friend into the story.

Pro tip: Give every character a name in your prompt. Mankai uses names to decide who says and does what.
04

WRITE A PROMPT THAT READS LIKE A STORY

You don’t need special keywords. Write the way you’d pitch the story to a friend: who is involved, where it happens, what goes wrong, and how the chapter ends. Mankai turns that into scenes, decides which moments get the biggest panels, and writes the dialogue into speech bubbles.

Example prompt

“Kairo, a disgraced samurai, agrees to escort Shiori across a burning country. Halfway through, he learns her father is the man who ruined him. End with Kairo choosing to protect her anyway as an army appears on the hill.”

Pro tip: Say how the chapter should end. A clear final beat gives the whole story a shape — and a hook for the next episode.
05

CHOOSE THE LENGTH AND THE LANGUAGE

Stories can be 2 to 18 pages. For a first manga, 4–6 pages is the sweet spot: long enough to introduce a character and a conflict, short enough to end on a cliffhanger.

Then pick the language for the speech bubbles — English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Turkish, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese or Arabic — so your readers can follow it naturally.

06

GENERATE, READ, SHARE — AND CONTINUE THE SERIES

Mankai draws and letters every page while you wait; you can leave and come back, and the finished manga is waiting in your library. From there, download it as a PDF or share the pages straight from your phone.

Loved how it ended? Start a new episode from the finished story — Mankai keeps the same characters, so your one-shot can grow into a series.

Pro tip: Post the first episode and ask readers what should happen next — then make it.

HOW TO CREATE A MANGA STORY AND CHARACTERS PEOPLE REMEMBER

A memorable manga character has a clear want, a visible flaw and a look you can recognise in a single panel. Decide those three things before you write the prompt. With Mankai, you can then lock the look in by choosing a preset character or creating one from a photo — the same face appears on every page.

For the story, think in beats rather than scenes: the hook, the problem getting worse, the turning point and the final image. Short manga live and die by that last panel, so write it into your prompt.

Avoid these

COMMON MISTAKES IN AI MANGA

Prompts that describe images, not events

"A cool samurai in the rain" gives you a picture. "A samurai in the rain refuses an order to kill his brother" gives you a story.

Too many characters too soon

Two or three characters are easier for readers to follow in a short story. Save the big ensemble for later episodes.

No ending

If the prompt doesn't say how it ends, the story can feel like it stops mid-sentence. Always give a final beat.

The wrong style for the genre

A cosy romance in gritty seinen, or a dark thriller in pastel romance art, fights the story. Match the style to the mood.
